METHOD FOR DEGRADING BIOMASS, SACCHARIDES, AND LIGNIN DERIVATIVES

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a method for degrading biomass, which can degrade main components of the biomass efficiently; saccharides extracted by such a degradation method; and low molecular weight lignin derivatives extracted by the degradation method.SOLUTION: A method for degrading biomass comprises: a formic treatment step S1 of heating biomass 1 and a liquid including formic acid in a contact state of these; and a polar solvent treatment step S2 of contacting an insoluble matter 2 in a processed product obtained in the formic acid treatment step S1 and a liquid including water and aprotic polar solvent and, after heating these, removing the aprotic polar solvent. In the formic acid treatment step S1, at least one of a saccharide 3 derived from cellulose and a saccharide 4 derived from hemicellulose can be extracted as a soluble matter of the processed product.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
