827,564. Piston and stuffing-box packing. KNORR-BREMSE G.m.b.H. Oct. 1, 1957 [Oct. 2, 1956], No. 30705/57. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). A packing arrangement between relatively movable parts comprises an elastic packing ring 13 housed in a recess 5 in one of the parts and having two flexible limbs separated by a circumferential groove 15 opening towards that part, the limbs bearing resiliently against opposite side walls of the recess and the inner or outer periphery 21 of the ring contacting the other part and the arrangement being such that one of the limbs is deformed elastically by the sealed fluid to permit the fluid to enter the recess. As shown in Fig. 1, the recess 5, formed in a piston 1 is divided into two chambers 9, 11 by a web 7 integral with the piston and extending into the recess and beads 17, 19 on the ring engage the recess side walls. The outer periphery of the ring contacts the cylinder wall 23 and extrusion of the ring between the piston and cylinder wall is prevented by rings 25, 27. In operation, air pressure to be sealed and acting in the direction of the arrow forces the bead 17 away from the associated side wall, as in Fig. 2, and urges the bead 19 and the periphery 21 of the ring tightly against the other side wall and the cylinder wall respectively. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the packing ring is housed in a recess in a fixed part and its inner periphery bears against a movable part. In a further modification, the packing ring is of triangular cross-section and, in a still further modification, the web 7 is omitted.
|
