An engine comprising a fixed stator 2 having a circular opening 3, in which is concentrically mounted a rotor 1 such that a circular radial space 4 exists between the rotor and the stator. A number of pistons 5 are engaged in the radial space between the rotor and stator. The pistons are movable along the space relative to the stator and are a sealing fit between the rotor and stator to be a fluid tight fit therewith. The stator includes multiple chambers 7a, 7b, 7c each of which opens into the radial space and which form combustion and/or exhaust chambers for the engine. As each piston moves along the radial space, fuel is compressed by the piston into one of the chambers igniting means being associated with each combustion chamber such that compressed fuel is ignited in the combustion chamber as the piston passes, applying a pressure to the back of the piston and driving rotational movement. The inverse, where the stator is within an opening in the rotor, has also been claimed. |
