<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adapter that enables various kinds of optical systems to appropriately function in an interchangeable-lens camera system. <P>SOLUTION: An adapter comprises: a first mount unit to which a camera body provided with a focus detection unit for performing focus detection is detachably attached; a second mount unit that is provided separately from the first mount unit and to which an interchangeable lens provided with a focus adjustment mechanism including a focus lens for performing focus adjustment is detachably attached; and an adapter control unit capable of communicating with the camera body mounted on the first mount unit on the basis of a first communication standard and capable of communicating with the interchangeable lens mounted on the second mount unit on the basis of a second communication standard.
