SINGLE-WALLED COMBUSTOR FOR A GAS TURBINE ENGINE AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE

A single-walled combustor includes a multi-layered wall having a first face 102 defining a cooling plenum 74 and an opposite second face 100. A thermal barrier coating 98 of the wall may be secured to the second face 100 and defines at least in-part a combustion chamber 66. A plurality of cooling circuits 108 each extend through the base layer 96 and the thermal barrier coating 98 for flowing cooling air from the plenum 74 and into the combustion chamber 66. Each circuit 108 includes a first surface 116 recessed from the second face 100 and spaced from the thermal barrier coating 98 with a channel 114 defined in-part by the first surface 102 and covered by the thermal barrier coating 98. A hole 122 in the thermal barrier coating 98 is in fluid communication between the channel 114 and the combustion chamber 66. A method of manufacturing the circuit includes fabricating the base layer 96 with the aperture 110 and hole 122; then placing an insert 152 into the channel 114 prior to application of the coating over the base layer 96 and insert 152. The insert 152 is then removed and the film cooling hole 112 is formed through the coating 98.
