The internal combustion engine (1) has an exhaust gas line (6) and an exhaust gas turbocharger (2) which is connected to the exhaust gas line, where a parallel-exhaust gas branch (6c) is provided with an exhaust-gas cooler (11). The parallel-exhaust gas branch is connected at a discharge port (12a) and a recycle port (12b) of the exhaust gas line. The recycle port is arranged in the flow direction after the discharge port. One or multiple valve units (13a) are arranged in the exhaust gas line or the parallel-exhaust has branch. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for controlling the operating temperature of the exhaust gas turbocharger of an internal combustion engine; and (2) a method for regulating the operating temperature of the exhaust gas turbocharger of an internal combustion engine.
