Particularly pure sulphoxides of formula : R.SO.R 1 where R is a C8-18 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R 1 is a C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a mononuclear aromatic group or a heterocyclic group may be made either (a) by reacting a C8-18 alkyl bromide with an appropriate mercaptan in alkaline solution to give a thioether which is then oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in acetone solution, or (b) by reacting a 1-alkene and a mercaptan in the presence of peroxides or disulphides to give a thioether which is then subjected to air oxidation in the liquid phase with oxides of nitrogen as catalyst. R may be caprylyl, capryl, lauryl, myristyl, palmityl, stearyl or oleyl and R 1 vinyl, isopropyl, phenyl, tolyl or a piperidine, pyridine, triazine or triazole radical. U.S.A. Specification 2,787,595 is referred to.ALSO:A detergent composition contains 0.1-4%, preferably 1-3%, by weight of a sulphoxide of general formula R.S.O.R1, where R is a C8-C18, preferably a C10-C14, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, and R1 is a C1-C4 saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a mononuclear aromatic group, or a heterocyclic group, the amount of sulphoxide present being a minor proportion of the total amount of detergent present; the preferred compound is dodecyl methyl sulphoxide. The detergent present may be an alkylaryl sulphonate, a fatty acyl tauride, an alkyl sulphate or a condensate of ethylene oxide with fatty acids or alkylphenols, or sulphated products of such alkylphenol condensates; the anionic detergents are generally used in the form of the sodium, potassium or ammonium salts. Alkali metal carbonates, silicates, phosphates, polyphosphates, borates, sulphates, perborates, percarbonates, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium xylene or toluene sulphonate, potassium hydroxide, fatty alkanolamides, ethanol, optical bleach, dye and perfume may be incorporated and the composition compounded in powder, or tablet form, but the composition is particularly suitable in liquid form.
