A method for producing a stator winding (18) of an electrical machine (10), wherein the stator winding (18) has at least n phase windings (120, 121, 122, 123, 124) and a phase winding (120, 121, 122, 123, 124) has a plurality of directly successive wound coils (82) including at least a first coil (82.1) and a second coil (82.2) directly adjacent the first coil (82.1) with a coil connector (94.1) provided integrally therebetween, the method comprising: winding each of the coils (82) with a plurality of turns (85), each turn (85) including a pair of parallel coil sides (88) integrally connected with a corresponding coil side connector (91); shaping each of the first and second coils (82.1, 82.2) after winding of the turns (85) such that all of the coil sides (88) of the first coil (82.1) and all of the coil sides (88) of the second coil (82.2) are arranged in-plane with one another; rotating the first and second coils (82.1, 82.2) in mutually opposite directions, each of the first and second coils (82.1, 82.2) being rotated through 90 angular degrees with respect to the coil connector (94.1) such that a plane containing the coil sides (88) of the first coil (82.1) is parallel to and spaced from a plane containing the coil sides (88) of the second coil (82.2); providing a shaping tool (100), in which slots (105, 106; 105′, 106′) are provided which are suitable for holding the coils (82); and arranging the first coil (82.1) in one slot (105; 105′) of the shaping tool (100), arranging the second coil in another slot (105; 105′) of the shaping tool (100), and arranging n−1 slots (105, 106; 105′, 106′) of the shaping tool (100) between the first coil (82.1) and the second coil (82.2).
