Predicting future power level states for processor cores

In one embodiment, the present invention includes a method for providing power state change information from a plurality of cores of a processor to a predictor at a periodic interval and generating a prediction to indicate a predicted operation level of the cores during a next operating period. 1. A method comprising:
providing power state change information at a periodic interval from a plurality of cores of a processor to a predictor; computing a pattern distribution including a plurality of patterns based on the power state change information, each pattern to indicate a predicted operation level of the plurality of cores for a portion of a next operating period; and determining a low power state level for the processor for the next operating period based on the pattern distribution, and selecting the determined low power state level or an operating system (OS) power state level to be the power saving state for a first core of the plurality of cores when the first core is to idle during the next operating period.
