<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device and a vehicle control method that can restart an engine in appropriate timing after an automatic stop. <P>SOLUTION: An engine control part 80 not only automatically stops the engine when the condition for automatically stop the engine is satisfied but also restarts the engine after the engine is automatically stopped when the restart condition is satisfied. A brake hydraulic pressure control part 70 and the engine control part 80 not only follow the preceding vehicle to automatically stop the own vehicle in case the own vehicle stop condition is satisfied under the follow-up condition of the preceding vehicle but also follow the preceding vehicle to automatically start the own vehicle in case the starting condition of the own vehicle is satisfied. In addition, a preceding vehicle status operation part 20 detects the acceleration of the preceding vehicle and the preceding vehicle follow-up control part 60 calculates the start target acceleration when the own vehicle is automatically started based on the detected acceleration.
