The humeral stem functions as a universal platform that may be used in either conventional or “reverse” total shoulder arthroplasties, as well as hemi shoulder arthroplasties, and may remain implanted in place during a revision in which the implant system is converted between the foregoing configurations, for example.

A humeral implant component for use in a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, comprising: a stem that includes a stem portion extending toward a distal end of the stem and a head portion at a proximal end of the stem, said head portion including a head portion cavity with a first diameter portion and an annular rib element that projects into the head portion cavity from said first diameter portion to create a second diameter portion in the head portion cavity, said second diameter portion having a smaller diameter than said first diameter portion; and an articulating liner, the articulating liner including a first end that is receivable in said head portion cavity for axially securing said articulating liner to said head portion, said articulating liner being substantially wedge-shaped with an annular upper surface opposite an annular lower surface and with a concave articulating surface extending from said annular upper surface for articulating against a convex surface of a glenoid component, said annular upper surface and said annular lower surface defining an angle therebetween, said annular upper surface being angled between about 55 degrees and about 70 degrees with respect to a longitudinal axis of said stem, said annular lower surface being angled between about 35 degrees and about 55 degrees with respect to said longitudinal axis of said stem, wherein the first end of the articulating liner includes an annular engagement structure configured to extend into the first diameter portion of the head portion cavity behind said annular rib element so as to engage said annular rib element for axially securing the articulating liner to the head portion wherein the head portion cavity includes a tapered bore providing a third diameter portion with a diameter that is smaller than said second diameter portion, and wherein the first end of the articulating liner further includes a post projecting beyond said annular engagement structure for receipt in said tapered bore for axially securing said articulating liner to said head portion.
