The present invention relates to an air conditioner and a controlling method for the same. The air conditioner comprises: a first filter; a second filter disposed in a slipstream of the first filter in the air flowing direction; a dust amount sensor disposed before the first filter in the air flowing direction, having a hole part through which dust passes, and separately transmitting a first sum of dust in a first size range of the dust passing through the hole part and a second sum of the dust in a second size range which is smaller than the first size range per unit time; and a control part which outputs a service signal for the first filter when the accumulated value of the first sum transmitted from the dust amount sensor is greater than a first defined value and outputs a service signal for the second filter when the accumulated value of the second sum transmitted from the dust amount sensor is greater than a second defined value. Since optimal service time for each of the first and second filters filtering dust of different sizes can be independently calculated, unnecessary service for one among the first and second filters can be avoided and optimal service time for the indoor air quality can be notified. |
