A method for inhibiting phosphate uptake in the gastrointestinal tract of a patient in need of phosphate lowering, comprising enterally administering to the patient a substantially systemically non-bioavailable compound that binds to NHE3 and is substantially active in the gastrointestinal tract to inhibit transport of phosphate ions (Pi) therein upon administration to the patient in need thereof.
