A liquid crystal display panel (100A, 100B) has: a transverse electric mode liquid crystal cell (10); a first polarizing plate (22A, 22B) disposed on the back surface side of the liquid crystal cell (10); and a second polarizing plate (24A, 24B) disposed on the observer side of the liquid crystal cell (10). A liquid crystal layer (18) includes nematic liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy, and letting Δn be the birefringence of the nematic liquid crystals and d be the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, Δnd is less than 550 nm. When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystal layer is in a twisted orientation state, and when polarized light where the absolute value for Stokes parameter S3 (|S3|) is 1.00 is incident, |S3| for the polarized light passing through the liquid crystal layer (18) perpendicularly is 0.85 or greater. The first polarizing plate (22A, 22B) and the second polarizing plate (24A, 24B) are circular polarizing plates or elliptical polarizing plates with an ellipticity of 0.422 or greater. |
