Rotation control for an electric submersible pump (ESP) is provided. In one possible implementation, a controller dynamically measures a motor condition, such as an ongoing temperature, of a turned-off AC motor of an electric submersible pump (ESP) and injects a current to the motor to lock or slow down passive rotation of the motor caused by flow-through pumped from another ESP in the well. The controller dynamically varies the current to maintain the temperature of the motor below a safety threshold, in order to lock the ESP for long durations. The controller may apply a current through certain phase(s) of the AC motor, and then switch phases when a temperature of motor windings associated with the current phase exceed a given threshold. The controller may taper the current to obtain a desired balance of rotational lock or slowdown versus rising motor temperature caused by the application of the locking current. |
