Provided is a polarization element that can achieve achromatic white during white display and achromatic black in black display while having high transmittance. The polarization element is formed from a base material containing an azo compound as a constituent component and is characterized by the unit transmittance being 35 - 80% and by the absolute values for the chromaticity a* value and b* value found according to JIS Z 8781-4:2013 during transmittance measurements for natural light being 1 or less in a single polarized light element, 2 or less in a state where two polarization elements are disposed such that the direction of the absorption axes for the same are parallel to each other, and 2 or less in a state where two polarization elements are disposed such that the direction of the absorption axes for the same are orthogonal to each other.
