A liquid crystal display device (100) wherein a first substrate (10) has first electrodes (11) provided corresponding to respective pixels and a second electrode (12) that generates a horizontal electric field in a liquid crystal layer (30) in conjunction with the first electrodes, and a second substrate (20) has a third electrode (21) that generates a vertical electric field in the liquid crystal layer in conjunction with the first electrodes and the second electrodes. Each pixel can switch between a black display state in which a vertical electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer to display black, a white display state in which a horizontal electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer to display white, and a transparent display state in which no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer, and the back side of the liquid crystal panel (1) can be seen. The difference in potential between the first electrodes and the second electrode in each gradation, from the lowest to the highest gradation, is 60% or less of the difference in potential between the second electrode and the third electrode in the black display state. |
