PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide recombinant influenza virus-like particles (VLPs) produced in transgenic plants expressing hemagglutinin.SOLUTION: A method for synthesizing influenza virus-like particles (VLPs) in a plant or in a portion of a plant is provided. The method involves expression of influenza HA in a plant, and purification thereof by size exclusion chromatography. The invention also relates to VLPs comprising influenza HA protein and plant lipids. The invention is further directed to a nucleic acid encoding the influenza HA protein as well as vectors. The VLPs may be used for formulating influenza vaccines or may be used to enrich existing vaccines.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2A
