[Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXII] A machine for making pipes in situ comprises a motor vehicle and trailer on which are mounted a support for a roll of metal strip, means for gripping and electrically welding together the trailing end of one strip and the leading end of another, a series of skelping rolls to form the strip into a tube, means for electrically welding the meeting edges of the tubular strip, annular jaws for continuously advancing the welded pipe and guide rollers arranged to lead the finished pipe towards the ground. An engine and generator 1 mounted on the vehicle a, Fig. 1a, supplies electrical power by way of a control panel 4 to the pipe making plant on the trailer b. Rolls of metal strip 8 are lifted on to the trailer by a crane 6 and placed on supports 7 from which the strip is unwound and passed between guide rolls 9 followed by a series of skelping rolls 10. Rolls 9 are arranged in pairs on each side of a pneumatic press, Fig. 3, wherein the ends of two strips are clamped against stops 16 while being welded together with a consumable electrode from a reel 18. Flux may be supplied from a hopper through a tube 20. After passing through the rolls 10, the skelp is brought to true cylindrical form by rolls 29, Fig. 7, while the edges of the strip are correctly shaped by co-operating internal and external rolls 22. The lower internal rolls have a central annular projection which passes between the edges while the upper outer rolls bear on the upper surfaces of the edges. The final closure of the skelp is effected in a die 24 which is followed by another welding plant using a consumable electrode 27 and an internal cooled copper support 26. Welded pipe is continuously pulled from the machine by two unidirectional annular clamps 35 moved to and fro by endless chains 36, 37 and arranged so that one pulls while the other is making an idle return movement at higher speed. Each clamp is mounted on a carriage 32 with wheels 33 running on rails 34 and with hooks 38, 39 adapted to engage the working and return chains respectively. At the end of each traverse of the carriage a stop member engages an arm 56 of a rotary valve 57 to actuate a piston within a double-acting cylinder 41 and so engage or disengage the hook 38 from the driving chain. An arm 44 coupled with the hook 38 operates a switch 48 to control a solenoid 49 and so actuate the hook 39 that it engages the return chain when the hook 38 is released and vice versa. The laying of the pipe is facilitated by rollers 63, Fig. 1c, mounted on swing bars arranged on an inclined plane.</p>
