Layers of material to be stitched together are temporarily clamped between plates adapted when closed to cause automatic fulling of at least one of the layers, each of said plates being provided with at least one slot for exposing material through which a sewing-machine needle is to pass, and the plates are positively guided on a work surface in predetermined relationship to the sewing-machine needle so that the latter will automatically stitch through the slots and secure the layers together with a required line or line of stitching. A work clamp, Figs. 2, 6, for use in fulling a pocket flap 15 and joining it to a lining 16 comprises three superposed plates 2, 3 and 4 connected together by aligned hinges 5 and 6. The outer plates 2 and 3 are formed with needle-passing slots 7 and 8 respectively which are aligned when the plates are folded together and which are in the form of the desired seam. Blocks 10 on plate 3 serve to locate the lining 16, positioned between plates 3 and 4, and enter registering openings 11 in plate 2. Plate 4 enters a recess 4a in plate 2 and carries a block 13 which enters an opening 14 in plate 2 to give a fulling effect to the flap 15 positioned between plates 2 and 4. Plate 3 has an underneath layer 12 of non-slip material to provide good control when the clamp is moved over the work-supporting surface 20 of a sewing machine. The presser foot is replaced by a foot 17 carrying a hollow spindle 18 which serves as a guide for the needle 20 and which journals a roller 9 engageable in the wider slot 7 which serves as a guideway therefor. A bush 9a, fixed to the workplate 20 in alignment with spindle 18, enters slot 8 and serves to support the work therein. The clamp is moved by the feed dogs which have frictional pieces secured thereto instead of the usual serrated edges. In a modification, Fig. 7, the slots 7, 8 are of equal width and angles 7a are fixed to plate 2 on either side of slot 7 to provide a guideway for roller 9. A clamp, Fig. 9, for use in sewing collars of different lengths has outer plates 28, 29 joined together by a hinge 30, and an intermediate plate 33 hinged to plate 29. The plates are divided and hinge 30 is adjustable to permit of longitudinal extension. Blocks 34 on plate 32 enter openings in plate 28 to provide a fulling effect in the upper layer. One half of plate 28 has extension guides 31 for the guide slot 7 therein, and the free edge of plate 28 is complementary to the inner edge of a location block 32 on plate 29. |
