In a vehicle steering gear comprising a nut 20 mounted on the steering column 14 and having a rack 24 engaging a toothed sector 26 on a pitman-operating shaft 28, backlash between the teeth of the rack and sector in the central position of the latter is prevented by forming the teeth on conical surfaces so that they are inclined, and providing a high point in the form of a button 50 projecting from the side of the sector and which, in -the central position, is engaged by a plunger 46 loaded by a spring 42 to press the teeth into contact. In other positions the force of spring 42 is overridden by that of a second spring 56 encircling shaft 28. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the button is provided on the side of the nut 20. |
