The invention comprises 16-methyl-pregn-11-one derivatives having the formula: <FORM:0934712/IV(a)/1> where R and R1 both designate either the ketonic oxygen atom =O or the residue of a cyclic ketal grouping and X and Y either can represent a double bond between the 16- and 17-positions or alternatively in the case when R and r1 both represent cyclic ketal groups, may also represent an epoxide link between the 16- and 17-positions and processes for the production thereof by condensing pregn-16-en-3,11,20-trione with diazomethane in an inert organic solvent to form the corresponding 16,17-pyrazoline and heating the latter in a high boiling point solvent. Subsequently ketalisation may be effected at the 3- and 20-positions to form 3,20-diketal of 16-methyl-pregn-16-en-3,11,20-trione, which may be epoxidised, e.g. with a peracid at the 16,17-positions. |
