A mixture of polyisobutylene polymer and microcrystalline wax is used to coat the metal separator strips between the panes of a double glazing unit (see Group X). The wax and polymer are preferably in equal parts, but the proportions may very between 25 and 75 parts per 100 parts by weight. The polyisobutylene polymer has a molecular weight in the range of 10,000 to 15,000. A further mixture of polyisobutylene polymer and finely divided clay filler with a small amount of aluminium oleate as a stabilizer may be used to form a cushioning layer protecting the edges of the glass panes. The preferred mixture comprises 50 parts by weight of polyisobutylene polymer, 50 parts by weight of clay filler and 2 parts by weight of aluminium oleate, but the proportions of polymer and filler may each vary between 35 and 65 parts per 100 parts by weight and up to 5 parts of aluminium oleate may be used. Aluminium stearate, aluminium palmitate &c. also may be included in the mixture. The polyisobutylene polymer in the mixture for the cushioning layer has a molecular weight in the range of 10,000 to 70,000, and preferably between 20,000 and 25,000. Specification 895,236 is referred to. |
