A valve, for use particularly in conveying waste gases from furnaces, comprises a housing 1 having two coaxial inlet and outlet flanges 11a, a rotary valve member disposed in the housing, this member comprising two hollow cylinders 3, 4 of equal length with their axes at rightangles to each other, one cylinder extending through and closing the other cylinder, a sealing member 7 having a part-spherical surface on each end of each cylinder, two sealing rings 8 slidably mounted, e.g. by channel rings 9a, one on each of two pipes 10a extending into the housing from the flanges, each sealing ring being carried from a frame 10 and being connected to the housing by a flexible sealing member or diaphragm 9, and a driving mechanism for moving the supporting structures and thence the sealing rings 8 towards or away from the valve member. The driving mechanism comprises an electric motor 15 which rotates a number of spindles 14 through a chain drive 16, 17, these spindles carrying movable nuts 13 which move the frames 10 through doublearmed levers 11, 12. A second electric motor 21 rotates the valve member between its open and closed positions. Both motors may be controlled together so that the movements of the sealing rings and of the valve member occur in the correct sequence. Excess pressure in the body space enclosed by the flexible diaphragms is relieved through one or more relief valves 19a or through one or more explosion valves 20.
