Gossypol and related pigments are removed from cottonseed oil by treatment with a borate solution to produce borate-gossypol complexes which are then removed, e.g. by centrifuging, decanting or filtering. Borax and sodium metaborate are specified. According to an example, crude cottonseed oil was stirred with an aqueous solution containing borax and sodium hydroxide for 20 minutes at 58 DEG C. After allowing the contents to settle, the borate-complexes were removed, and the oil was washed to remove remaining impurities. Aqueous caustic soda was then added and stirred for 15 minutes at 55-60 DEG C. The oil was allowed to settle and the soap stock removed. The oil was washed with water, dried and filtered.ALSO:Gossypol and related pigments are removed from cotton seed products, such as cotton seed oil, cottonseed meal and flour, by treatment with a borate solution to produce borate-gossypol complexes which are then removed, e.g. by centrifuging, decanting or filtering. Borax and sodium meta-borate are specified. The treated cottonseed products may safely be used in animal feeds. According to an example, 500 g. of oil-free cottonseed meal was mixed with 1,5 litres of a 0,5% aqueous solution of borax. The mixture was vigorously stirred for 30 minutes and then centrifuged. The residue was then thoroughly washed and the meal thus obtained dried under vacuum. A choroform extract of the meal indicated the absence of gossypol and related pigments. |
