The present invention relates to an electric propulsion system of a ship enabling a device configuring a propulsion plant required for navigation to be directly controlled by a controller without being affected by an error of an external device to operate the propulsion plant independently, and a method for controlling propulsion thereof. According to one embodiment of the present invention, provided is the electric propulsion system installed in a ship comprising: the device configuring the propulsion plant required for navigation of the ship; the controller connected to the device to control the device; and a communications unit transmitting status information of the device controlled by the controller to the external device.
