[Also in Group XXVIII] A ship (having a depth to beam ratio of about 1 : 1À1) comprises an outer hull 3, an inner wall 4 defining a fluid-tight cargo space, cargo tanks 17 (about twice as high as they are wide) in said cargo space, and a thick layer 16 of a thermal insulating material (e.g. balsa wood) on the wall 4 (see Fig. 11) between the cargo tanks 17 and the wall 4. The doublewalled sides and bottom of the ship are divided into wing tanks 11 and bottom tanks 8, 9. Cofferdams 2 extend across the ship. Each tank 17 has a thermally insulated dome 21 extending upwardly through the deck of the ship, through which dome the liquid cargo may be loaded and unloaded. In the embodiment of Fig. 13 the weight of the dome is carried by the deck 28. Circumferential corrugations 25 between lower and upper portions 26, 27 allow for temperature changes. In the event that the insulation 16 should be inadequate, to prevent the extremely cold cargo from refrigerating the load carrying structure of the ship a system of conduits and pumps is provided whereby the liquid ballast in the tanks 8, 9, and 11 is circulated to effect a heat exchange between the inner walls 4 and the outer hull 3 and the sea and air surrounding the ship. A spray may be projected against the upper surface of the walls 4 by means of conduits 50, Fig. 10. The structural portion of the hull may also be protected from becoming refrigerated by the inclusion of steam lines in the bottom and wing tank spaces.
