Apparatus for the thermocatalytic conversion of high molecular weight gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons with steam, air or other oxygen containing gases, into gases such as methane or carbon monoxide and hydrogen, comprises two reaction chambers 1, 4, the first chamber 1, containing a stationary grid structure or a loose bed 2 of cracking catalysts which is after the inlets 9 for the hydrocarbons, there being inlets 12 for steam or air at the entry of the second chamber 4 and outlets 13 for the gas mixture which is formed. The chamber 1 may surmount chamber 4, the latter being wider to accommodate the increased volume of the resultant gas mixture, or, as shown, the chamber 4 may surround chamber 1 a gap 8 at the top of wall 7 allowing intercommunication between the two. Steam, air or other oxygen containing gases may be fed through pipe 17 and inlet 18 to the inlet of chamber 1 and by means of nozzle 26 may cause product gas to be recycled through pipe 14 to the chamber 1. If during the heating period combustion of the substances deposited in the catalysts is insufficient to raise the temperature to the required level, burners 19, 20 may be used, and openings 21 may be supplied with cold air or steam or other gases, if required, to prevent the chamber 1 becoming too hot. Heat exchangers 3, 6, 16, 23 may be provided. The catalyst in the grid structure or loose bed 2 may consist of pure or mixed oxidic compounds of Al, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd, Si, B, Sn, Li, Ti, Be, Zr, Mo and in the grid or heaped bed 5 which may be provided in chamber 4, heavy metals, metal oxides and/or metal sulphides on an inert carrier substance, for instance mixtures of Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 , MgO and SiO 3 . |
