Propylene is polymerized using a catalyst obtained by dispersing in a hydrocarbon a halide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal, the metal being in a valence state lower than its maximum, and an alkali metal hydride, followed by heating, cooling and adding aluminium trichloride. Ethylene and/or propylene may be added to the catalyst before elevating to polymerization temperature, in order to effect control of molecular weight. Specified hydrides are LiH, NaH, KH, LiAlH4, NaBH4, and KBH4. In the example isopropanol, nitric acid, methanol and pentane are used in the purification of the polymer.ALSO:A catalyst for polymerizing propylene is obtained by dispersing in a hydrocarbon a halide of a Group IVa, Va or VIa metal, the metal being in a valence state lower than its maximum, and an alkali metal hydride, followed by heating at 100-180 DEG C., cooling to below 90 DEG C. and adding aluminium trichloride. Preferred catalyst components are the halides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Cr, Mo and W, e.g. TiCl3, and LiH, NaH, KH, LiAlH4, NaBH4 and KBH4.
