A tensioning device for the timing chain of an internal combustion engine comprises a friction pad 7 carried by a support 6 pivoted on a pin 9, the pad 7 being urged into engagement with the chain 5 by means of a spring pressed member 16. The chain runs between parallel guide plates 14 carried by the support 6 and mounted on rubber blocks 15 constituting vibration dampers. The plate 6 is guided by a curved slot 11 formed in the plate and engaging a fixed stub 12 carried by the cylinder block. In a modification, a pivoted arm 18 carrying a friction pad 19 is engaged by a tension spring 24 and a non-recoil spring 27 which, due to its frictional engagement with a washer 26, prevents backward movements of the arm 18. |
