The polymer may be polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, a polyamide, polyglycolterephthalate, polystyrene, rubber, cellulose acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, or cellulose, and the grafting material may be ethylene, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl carbazole, butadiene, acrylonitrile or acrylamide, which may be present in a solution which may also contain a chain transfer agent such as a mercaptan, carbon tetrachloride or bromoform. The original polymer may be a shaped product, the process being carried out so as to modify only the surface for improved acceptance of colouring matter or for improved resistance to wear or to the action of oils, hydrocarbons, acids and alkalies.</p> |
