902,506. Chucks and mandrels. GLEASON WORKS. May 13, 1960 [May 20, 1959], No. 16973/60. Class 83 (3). A chuck comprises a body 10, Fig. 1, and a collet 23 supported thereby for axial movement, the collet having a split tubular portion with axially-spaced sets 28, 29 of work-engaging sections, the splits extending longitudinally and separating the sections of each set from each other, and also separating from each other parts 33 which interconnect longitudinallyaligned sections of the spaced sets, these parts being bowed in an axial plane to permit limited relative axial movement between the sets. The body has surfaces 19, 20 engaging the sets for deflecting them radially inwardly to grip a workpiece P, and spaced so that set 28 is deflected before set 29. The collet is movable by a draw-rod 25 which may be hydraulicallyactuated. In a modification, a mandrel comprises a body 40, Fig. 4, with spaced surfaces 42, 43 engaging sets 48, 49 of collet 44 for deflecting them radially outwardly to grip a workpiece P<SP>1</SP>. Set 49 is deflected before set 48 and the collet is movable by a drawroof 47. |
