A device suitable for measuring the height of building from a specified distance comprises a back plate 3 with an eye tube 1, a degree scale 5, and a weighted pointer 2 that swings about a pivot 4. In use, the top of a building is located though the eye tube, and the weighted pointer will point to a value based on the angle at which the device is being held. The reading will enable the height of the building to be determined using trigonometry. Tables enabling the calculation of the height may be printed on one side of the device. The device might also be used to determine cable tension or the depth of a hole. Alternatively it can be used as a vertical/horizontal level, an inclinometer, or a device to mark out particular angles. |
