A mobile robot 1 comprising: a vision system (2, figure 1), the vision system comprising a camera 24 and two or more light sources 4 each arranged to provide a level of illumination to an area surrounding the mobile robot; wherein the two or more light sources are arranged to illuminate separate areas surrounding the robot corresponding to different sections of an image captured by the camera, and the level of illumination provided by each of the light sources is independently adjustable. The robot may also include a control system (8, figure 1) which comprises a feature detection unit (9, figure 1) detecting features within an image captured by the camera, and wherein the level of illumination provided by the light sources is independently adjustable in response to the number of feature detected by the feature detection unit. The control system can be a simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) unit. Adjusting the level of illumination helps to improve the energy efficiency of the mobile robot. |
