A method and a system for improving operation of a hybrid vehicle are presented. In one example, operation of a transmission torque converter lockup clutch is adjusted by way of adjusting a transfer function based on torque supplied by an electric machine to improve engine starting control. The approach may improve engine starting and vehicle drivability. |

1. A hybrid powertrain operating method, comprising:
opening a driveline disconnect clutch positioned in a driveline between an electric machine and an engine in response to a request to adjust a transfer function of a torque converter lockup clutch; rotating at least a portion of the electric machine in the driveline; applying the torque converter lockup clutch in a plurality of step increases of application force commands in response to the request to adjust the transfer function of the torque converter lockup clutch; and adjusting the transfer function of the torque converter lockup clutch based on an amount of current supplied to the electric machine to maintain electric machine speed at a constant speed while applying the torque converter lockup clutch in the plurality of step increases in application force commands. |
