A detection apparatus for detecting movement of a predetermined object from captured images, the apparatus comprising: an acquisition section that acquires luminance information and color information, from the captured images continuously captured in frames by an image capture section; a determination section that determines whether to use either one or both among the luminance information and the color information in order to detect movement of the predetermined object, based on the luminance information and the color information acquired; a detection section that detects movement of the predetermined object using either one or both among the luminance information and the color information, based on a result of determination by the determination section; and a determination threshold setting section that sets a determination luminance threshold to be used in comparison with a difference in the luminance information between a plurality of consecutive frames, and a determination color threshold to be used in comparison with a difference in the color information between a plurality of consecutive frames, wherein the determination section determines whether to use either one or both among the luminance information and the color information in order to detect movement of the predetermined object based on the determination luminance threshold and the determination color threshold that have been set, and based on a difference of the luminance information and a difference of the color information that are acquired.
