An image forming apparatus comprising: an image bearing member for bearing an electrostatic latent image; a developing container for containing a developer; a developer carrying member, including a first electrode member, for carrying the developer contained in said developing container to develop the electrostatic latent image; a developer supplying member, including a second electrode member and a foam layer provided around the second electrode member, for supplying the developer contained in said developing container to said developer carrying member by rotation in contact with said developer carrying member; a supplying device for performing a supplying operation for supplying the developer to said foam layer on the basis of a toner content in said developer supplying member, with the toner content obtained by using a print ratio of an image to be formed; and a detecting device for detecting an amount of the developer contained in said developing container by detecting electrostatic capacity between the first electrode member and the second electrode member after the supplying operation by said supplying device, wherein the supplying operation is performed if the toner content is less than a predetermined content, and wherein when the toner content is a present toner content, the present toner content is obtained by a previous toner content and a present print ratio.
