PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of transitioning to a power supply state of a pre-electricity outage, without requiring addition of a nonvolatile memory to an engine unit.SOLUTION: Electric power is supplied to an engine CPU 203 and a controller 209 when an image forming apparatus 100 is connected to an external power source 220 or when power failure is resolved. This causes the engine CPU 203 to transition to a waiting mode. The controller 209 comprises a nonvolatile memory 208, and stores therein state information indicating a power supply state prior to a power supply interception. When electric power is re-supplied to the controller 209, a controller CPU 207 reads the state information from the nonvolatile memory 208 and transmits a transition command corresponding to the state information to the engine CPU 203.
