PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smelting method of nickel oxide ore that can effectively achieve smelting reaction in a reduction step while keeping strength of pellets in a method for forming the pellets from nickel oxide ore and smelting the pellets by reducing and heating in a smelting furnace.SOLUTION: A smelting method of nickel oxide ore includes a pellet manufacturing step S1 for manufacturing pellets from the nickel oxide ore, and a reducing step S2 for reducing and heating the obtained pellets at a predetermined reduction temperature in a smelting furnace. In the pellet manufacturing step S1, a raw material containing the nickel oxide ore is mixed without adding a carbonaceous reductant to obtain a mixture, which is agglomerated to form the pellets. In the reducing step S2, a hearth of the smelting furnace is laid with the carbonaceous reductant before the obtained pellets are loaded in the smelting furnace, and then the pellets are loaded on the carbonaceous reductant and further covered by the carbonaceous reductant.
