PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having magnetic particles with satisfactory crystal orientation and low particle diameter dispersion and satisfactory record reproducing characteristics and capable of high density recording.SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes: over a non-magnetic substrate, an orientation control layer formed of Ni alloy or Ag alloy having a fcc structure; a non-magnetic seed layer formed of Ag, Ge and a metal X selected from the group consisting of Al, Mg, Au and Ti; a non-magnetic intermediate layer consisting of Ru or an Ru alloy; and a magnetic recording layer.
