PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an observer to visually recognize a boundary generated due to a difference between black luminance of a display area and black luminance of a background.SOLUTION: A head-up display device 10 includes: a light source 12; a liquid crystal display element 13 that controls transmittance of light from the light source 12 to display an image on a display member 15; an illuminance sensor 18 that measures environmental illuminance; and a control circuit 20 that controls the luminance of the light source 12 by using a result of the measurement by the illuminance sensor 18. The control circuit 20 controls the luminance of the light source 12 so that an observer does not visually recognize a boundary generated due to a difference between black luminance of a display area to be displayed on the display member 15 by the liquid crystal display element 13 and black luminance of a background around the display area.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
