PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a synthetic intermediate useful for obtaining a liquid crystal compound that has a dielectric anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) of a high negative value, a low viscosity, and a high refractive index anisotropy (&Dgr;n); a production method using the same; and a product thereof.SOLUTION: A compound having -CH=CH- or -C≡C- as a linking group, for example, a synthetic intermediate represented by the following formula (i-2), is prepared from 6-bromo-2-phenol through three steps, and further subjected to catalytic hydrogen reduction, resulting in synthesis of a liquid crystal compound represented by (ii-2).SELECTED DRAWING: None
