PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); or cramping, pain, diarrhea, constipation, lumpy stool, watery stool, frequent stool production, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, defecation urgency, or tenesmus associated with IBS.SOLUTION: A method of treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or symptoms associated therewith comprises administering 550 mg of rifaximin three times daily (TID). Rifaximin is administered to a subject for about 14 days to about 24 months; and, if the subject exhibits a sufficient relief from IBS symptoms, the administration is discontinued and the time course is observed.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
