This invention provides a media identification device that identifies media while smoothly conveying same. This invention also provides a media transaction device. In this invention, in an identification section (14) in an automated teller machine (1), an upper conveyance guide (30A) and a lower conveyance guide (30B) are each formed as a single component so as to extend into a first pre-conveyance section (21A) and an adjacent first post-conveyance section (21B). Banknotes can thus be guided along level top and bottom surfaces in the identification section (14) without forming the gaps, sudden level changes, or the like that can result when meshing parts are made to mesh in a region with comparatively narrow guide spacing. Consequently, this invention makes it possible to dramatically reduce the probability of a banknote jam occurring.
