Method of polymerization of vinyl esters

Vinyl esters are polymerized in the presence as polymerization medium of ethylene carbonate. The vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate and the polymer produced may be saponified to give a stable aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol. Azo-bis-isobutyronitrile may be used as polymerization catalyst.
