[Also in Group XL(a)] A lighting fitting especially for street lighting comprises one or more tubular fluorescent lamps mounted within an enclosure, part at least of which is of light transmitting material, and which has a volume not greater than ten times the volume of the envelope of the lamp or lamps, the fitting being mounted with its longitudinal axis inclined at an angle of more than 15 degrees and less than 45 degrees to the horizontal so that the lower end of each lamp is maintained solely by convection at a lower temperature than the upper end and constitutes a cool region for condensation of vaporizable metal within the lamp envelope. The fitting comprises a metal canopy 2 mounted by an elbow 4 on a post 5 and carrying a U-shaped enclosure 3 of acrylic resin on the side of which reflecting elements (not shown) may be mounted. The enclosure 3 contains three tubular fluorescent lamps 1 which may be not more than an inch apart, and is secured to the canopy by clips 9. A specular reflector may be mounted above the lamps and the control gear 6 of the lamps may be carried on the underside of the canopy. |
