Class 40(3) [Also in Groups XXII and XXXV] In apparatus for welding a cover-plate to an assembly of strips, the strips are located by means of radiation to which the cover-plate is at least partly transparent. The rigidly connected X-ray source 18 and receiver 25 are traversed from right to left by motor 22 to scan the assembly of strips 13 and cover-plate 12. Attenuation of X-rays due to a strip gives a pulse which triggers a pulse generator 28 to initiate an electron beam 4 for welding. Motor 22 supplies a signal dependent upon the scanner position to coils 9 to keep the point of impact of the beam a fixed distance from the X-ray beam and a signal dependent upon its speed to control a delay 27 such as a magnetic tape or memory tube. In modifications the scanner may be stationary and the workpiece traversed. In this form, the electron beam, reduced in intensity may excite secondary X-rays on impact with the workpiece, eliminating the need for an X-ray tube. The receiver may be of a two cell type giving a directive signal to control a servo system keeping it moving along a strip. The X-ray source may be replaced by a radioactive coating on at least part of the strip assembly.
