This invention provides a liquid-crystal display that makes it possible to improve response speed from an off state to an on state. Said liquid-crystal display has a first substrate, a second substrate, a horizontal-alignment liquid-crystal layer provided between the first and second substrates, and pixels. The first substrate is provided with a planar first counter electrode, a plurality of linear first pixel electrodes that are provided within the pixels so as to be parallel to each other, and a first insulating layer provided between the first counter electrode and the first pixel electrodes. The second substrate is provided with a planar second counter electrode that faces the first counter electrode, a plurality of linear second pixel electrodes that are provided within the pixels so as to correspond respectively to the plurality of first pixel electrodes, and a second insulating layer provided between the second counter electrode and the second pixel electrodes. Each second pixel electrode is provided so as to be parallel to the corresponding first pixel electrode. By applying a voltage between each first pixel electrode and the first counter electrode and between each second pixel electrode and the second counter electrode, the alignments of liquid-crystal molecules are changed. |
