In order to improve the quality of risk stratification for cardiac patients as compared to conventional mortality risk assessment concepts, the invention provides a device for assessing a mortality risk of a cardiac patient based on at least one vital sign or biosignal of said patient, said device comprising a data provision unit being configured to provide at least one data function of at least one vital sign or biosignal of said patient, a data processing unit being configured to process data of said at least one data function for assessing a mortality risk of said patient by performing the following actions: selecting at least one data sequence from said at least one data function according to a predetermined routine; computing a specific behavior of at least one parameter of said at least one data function based on said at least one selected data sequence; and assessing a mortality risk of said patient based on said computed behavior. A corresponding method and computer readable medium, which, when loaded, performs steps of said method, are also disclosed.
