1. A method for identifying a candidate compound for treating age-related or noise-induced hearing loss, the method comprising:
providing a test sample comprising a cell that expresses Islet-1 (Isl1); contacting the test sample with a test compound; and detecting an expression of Isl1 in the cell; wherein an increase in the expression or the activity of Isl1 in the presence of the test compound as compared to in the absence of the test compound indicates that the test compound is a candidate compound for treating age-related or noise-induced hearing loss.
